AT CLEARWATER THEY DO

Every day, students of all ages make decisions that affect their lives and community. Learning happens naturally, a result of debate, exploration, research and curiosity. Our students are adaptable, self-assured, thoughtful people with the skills that actually lead to success. At Clearwater,

school isn’t practice, it’s real life.

Kids practice true self-determination every day; parents practice faith and trust.

Just got back from Clearwater's Assembly Meeting (the assembly is comprised of all families, kids, and school staff, a/k/a "teachers"), and I was reminded of what I love about having my kids there. The kids educate themselves and each other, deciding what matters to them and acting on it instead of relying on adults to tell them what matters. This is so rare when everywhere else, anybody but kids are asked: businesses, legislators, etc. Kids practice true self-determination every day; parents practice faith and trust. My kids are interesting, intelligent, strange, compelling, and allowed to be who they are every day. Kudos to our staff and families who came together to sit today and talk about what matters so much to us.

Graduates end up knowing themselves deeply and knowing how to follow their own path, a knowledge that is immeasurably valuable.

The Clearwater School is a school modeled after the Sudbury Valley School in Massachusetts.  If you have heard of unschooling, Clearwater is, in a way, an unschooling school.  Their motto is "Freedom, Trust, Responsibility."  To truly understand, I recommend checking out their website.  My kids have been students at Clearwater for many years.  It is an amazing place, a place where they can be free to follow their passions, whatever they may be at the time. It's a place where they get to truly know themselves.  It is not a school for the faint of heart, however.  As a parent, you will be challenged.  Trusting your children in the Clearwater way can be difficult, because it means trusting them in all situations, despite the objections of many around you. Sudden misgivings about the ways they are choosing to spend their time can wake you up at night.  But then they will amaze you with some way that they have changed or blossomed in a way that would not have happened in a "normal" school.  In my opinion, Clearwater is about the whole person.  Graduates end up knowing themselves deeply and knowing how to follow their own path, a knowledge that is immeasurably valuable.
