It was sometime in the year of 1936 when L.C. Streeter and Joe Reidt applied to the Kirkland City Council for a permit to sell beer.  The location for this new beer hall was to be the old Gateway Theatre, which is now the Bio Azure, a trendy spa and health salon at 114 Central Way.  This license was rejected by the City Council for unknown reasons but the two entrepreneurs tried again.  This time the location of choice was a space in the building directly across the street that was known at the time as the National Supply Building.  Today, this building is better known as the Kirkland Roaster and Ale House.  The City's  fathers gave their approval for this license and so in 1936, a new tavern was born on Central Way.  Kirkland's first beer pub was appropriately named the Central Tavern.

Some three or four years later, the business was moved to the current location at 124 Kirkland Avenue.  This single story building of brick construction was built in 1924 and served as the first Safeway Grocery in Kirkland.  Sometime in the early 1940's, Safeway moved to a larger building up the street and the Central Tavern has been here ever since.

Attesting to the fact that the business enjoyed a good location and a good reputation, the list of owners is relatively short.  Marge Obenza bought the Central from Lyle and Dolly Muir, then eventually sold out to Ken Van Bebber.  He operated it until 1980 when he sold to Val and Fred Mund who stayed in business for only a couple of years.  Marilyn Bolles took over the ownership from the Munds and ran a successful operation for the next 18 years while developing  other interests in Eastern Washington, so the ownership was ultimately sold to her long time employee and now current owner, Diane Krushelnisky.

Keeping an established business in operation for this lenth of time means one has to change with the times.  During the days of the Muir's, the Central Tavern enjoyed that "neighborhood" feeling.  It was in the neighborhood place where you felt comfortable bringing your friends from out of town.  It was the friendly tavern where one would bring their children for their first beer on their 21st birthday.

Probably one of the biggest claims to fame the Muir family started was the full-length shuffleboard, one of the very few on the Eastside.  Tournaments were held regularly between 5 other local taverns.  Unfortunately the shuffleboard lost it's public appeal and was upgraded to a set of pool tables.

The Actual bar and stools used today are the original fixtures that date back to the early beginning.  You will notice that not much has changed at this quaint little bar as displayed in the picture collages that adorn the walls within the Central, ranging from the 40's and 50's to today's crowd regulars.  Next time you're there, you may want to take a look, especially If you grew up in the Kirkland area giving you a chance in possibly recognize a familiar face.

Sometime in 1992, the Kirkland Downtown Association decieded it would be a good idea to introduce live music in to the community.  Clubs in the town were to host a live jazz show on the first Wednesday night of every month.  Most of them did just that although the Central decieded to march to the tune of a different drummer, literally.  The Cat Morrison Band was brought in for the first Wednesday Night Jazz Session, but to refer to their style of music as jazz is quite a stretch. However what they did bring to the Central was and still is a high cross of every combinging blues and rock, two times a week.  Ten years later, we are still packing the house every Sunday and Wednesday evening, even though all of the other clubs stopped their own Jazz night back in 1998.

It's a small space for a band to set up, but they always find a way to sqeeze in. This makes for an extremely intimate showcase which most performers seem to prefer with so many current stages being "out of touch" with the actual crowd.  The different acts offer an infusion of rock, jazz, blues and country, even with an occasional bluegrass band.  There is something for everyone, regardless of musical preference.

Probibly the most recent noticeable change came with the introduction of hard spirits in the year 2000 when the liquor board changed the rules about such things and many smaller taverns made the change.  They were no longer allowed to call themselves a Tavern so the Central was forced to take the name, Central Club which it is known as today.  Since then, the clientel evolved into a younger crowd who enjoys the upscale drinks the club now has to offer.  The Central Club now presents some of the finest beverages and bartenders you will find anywhere in town.

The Central has come a long way since the days of it's early owners.  From the shuffleboards to the high-energy music, the one thing you can always count on, the Central hasn't changed and everyone is always guarenteed to have a good time.

Cheers to ya!

THIS is a proper dive bar)

THIS is a proper dive bar. If you're like me and being outside of a proper metropolitan area starts to destroy your soul in a few minutes, then this place will be a salvation to you if you're stuck in the increasingly affluent and quaint suburb of Kirkland. The booze is cheap, the regulars are regular, and the vibe is perfect. After walking in you will be transported away from Kirkland to a joint that feels straight up Pittsburgh. Don't come in expecting artisan cocktails or beautiful people. Come in to have a double of Johnny Walker Black and forget about life for a while.

friendly staff, fun jukebox, pull tabs, pool, one dart board, lots of tables, not horrid bathrooms and cheap tasty drinks

The Central Tavern is RAD RAD RAD! We came here on a Sat eve after dinner over at Bottle n Bull. We were in the mood for more drinks and some pool. Very chill vibe, friendly staff, fun jukebox, pull tabs, pool, one dart board, lots of tables, not horrid bathrooms and cheap tasty drinks. I really enjoyed wayyyyy too many whisky sours, and a very decent bloody marys. Def going to be a regular weekend hang out with the friends for a low key plain fun night. Oh, no food, there was a hotdog man outside which I am assuming is their food?

I will be coming back again and again.

Love the true divey feel of this place! The bartenders are great and the drinks are cold! While this establishment is on the smaller side it's ALWAYS packed on a fri/sat night. The general atmosphere is pretty friendly and it's in the name it's pretty central. ;) no food is served here but there is a awesome food cart right outside on Friday and Saturday nights other days I don't see the issue with eating at other spots then coming here after. Central tavern feels so out of place for Kirkland and that one thing I love about it! I mean you even see bikers come to this spot on weekends! It's worth checking out. Buy a pitcher, shoot some pool, shoot some darts, and make new friends! I will be coming back again and again.

Be aware that

If there was an option for no stars it would belong here. I have lived in Kirkland (including just blocks away from this place, for well over 15 years. Let's start with the bar staff shall we. 4 years ago was verbally abused (brought to tears and ran out) by a patron and due to that patron being friends with one staff member on the other side of the bar I have received par and unfriendly service. I even had to ask for my change on a 100 bill on 2 occasions. I don't believe that individual works there anymore. One female refused me service when I just entered to join a friend and order a drink. Again, maybe a patron complained because they couldn't get laid or were rejected....another bartender confronted her and I finally got a drink (it was first drink of the night). Another occasion I was with a male neighbor a bar tender has a crush on (confirmed by neighbor). She is alway VERY rude since. This neighbor is in a serious relationship of over 10 years!!!! They are caddy and unprofessional. I have done nothing but be a girl where normally a guy would NEVER have issues. If they don't like someone they share this with customers BE AWARE! Now, the patrons. Cat calls when running by this place at night have occurred! Patrons I have NEVER met have approached me like they know me and should be CUT OFF or kicked out for what they have said! This will never happen. I even had patrons overhear and ask if I was okay. Less atrocious behavior has been aimed at me and in nearly all cases the Patron has been escorted out! Not at the central! If your a dude and a regular you have free range. One customer approached me from years ago and tried to apologize...I turned and ran before they had a chance to finish. The Central is not a 'safe place'. I was even approached yesterday by a regular that overheard a bartender. They have no idea sometimes who they are talking in front of. Despite being in the community, a good standing customer of the area, I have no words for how atrocious this place is! There are other women in the community that I have met that have had similar treatment. There is NO WAY anyone can be happy running or working a business like that as a female...I expected more. If your a guy you may have an entirely different experience.

It's divey but friendly

This place is a hole in the wall, neighborhood favorite. It's divey but friendly and different from the rest of the Kirkland scene. Come for the Jell-O shots, stay for the pool tables, leave when it becomes impossible to move around anywhere in here after 9 pm and you start smelling like the sweaty dude next to you.

Very good place to hangout.

This not only my favorite place in Kirkland but is my favorite place on the west coast .It has a homie neighborhood feel. Diane has recently enlarge the place to accommodate bands on Wednesday and Sunday's and for Sea hawks fan's she threw up a giant 80 inch TV. Everyone working there are master mycologist with skills to pay the bills in the shot department. The staff are full of witty banter or the local gossip if needed. Very good place to hangout.... great value and drink prices.

It is a "dive bar" but I enjoy it.

It is a "dive bar" but I enjoy it. I don't think they serve any food that I am aware of but the drinks are cheap and it is not a bad spot for a cheap drink. This is the kind of location that does give Kirkland a "personality." All the surrounding bars are newer and have not been in Kirkland for more than 5 years. This bar was founded in 1936. I would recommend Wednesday nights if you want to see live music.

I've never had trouble finding a place to sit,

This place is awesome. Its pretty divey, and it's just right! We like to head down there and play pool about once every two weeks. The bartenders and door guys are always super funny, and make the atmosphere very laid back. It seems to be void of hipsters club types, so its' super easy to have a down to earth conversation with anyone there. Theres a huge TV in the back so you can watch our beloved Seahawks play, and I've never had trouble finding a place to sit, even on busy weekends. Stop outside and get some street meat from the hot dog dude! Two thumbs up!

I love this place!

I feel like this bar through its existence says eff you capitalism, Central Tavern is here to stay! No I have to say that this bar does not fit Kirkland, I feel like there is this unspoken rule that every establishment must be only been around 5 years or younger, must be expensive, and must have a fancy atmosphere. This bar has none of that in a good way as its filled with red lighting, filth, and people that look like I can lose a fight too.But you know what, I thats why I love this place. Its very low key and a great place to spend alot of chill time in not working about your appearance or latest rich accomplishment. GU APPROVED!

it's a nice place.Thanks!

I'm a fan! I have never been here before but have gone out in Kirkland many times. Odd? I was invited out to watch a friends band play so it helped draw a crowd into this establishment. The area was lively and even though it seemed like a cramped place, it accommodated a full band entertainment, fans, people playing pool, a long bar, and places to sit, dance, and rest your drink. Practically, a great layout for the space given. The bartenders are very quick and efficient. It's like they have many years of experience and are as what people say on here as no non-sense. The only bad is that it is very easy for one of the regulars to just cut right in front of you as you are patiently waiting your turn to order a drink from them....and no, tips don't matter or sway them (no non-sense remember?) Overall, a fun experience. Technically not a fair review of the entire place since I don't know if they have food and I did not attend on a regular day but I think it's a nice place one could be themselves in the vast range of bars in Kirkland. Thanks!
