Description

If it weren’t for Whitestone Logging Camp Hoonah, you might not be stepping into the Lady Yum shop or ordering up Lady Yum macarons. But the remote Alaskan village has everything to do with it.

See, in that backwoods place, I fell crazy in love with baking.

My dad had tossed normal suburban life to the wind when he whisked my family there, so he could get logging work. My mom, trying to cope with living in a junkyard with 3 small kids, liked to tell us we were having an Alaskan adventure. It helped, I think. Mom was pretty inventive – especially when she homeschooled my brothers and I in our singlewide trailer.

It was there I spent my days baking.

Whenever I tied on my apron, she would toss me a cookbook and say, “Have at ‘er, honey.” From chocolate chip oatmeal cookies to brownies and so much more, I did indeed – and Mom encouraged me all the way.

Want to see just how long I’ve been creating in the kitchen? Check out the video Mom shot of me making Santa stocking cookies (my Christmas specialty!) one cold, gray day in December.

(Totally off topic but a note about my chubby little self. This was 1994 and Frito-Lay had just introduced the Nacho Cheesier Doritos. Somehow, we’d acquired hundreds of sample bags and had an entire closet devoted to storing them. I was a not only a Nacho-aholic but craved Top Ramen and of course, fresh-baked cookies. Even my mom’s insistence that my brother and I Mousercise with Disney every Thursday at 9 A.M. couldn’t erase my indulgences.)

Eventually, the Doritos ran out, I grew up and civilization called. A business degree landed me Grown Up Jobs on a career path to fame and fortune. Or, at least, to respectability, sexy shoes and happy hour with co-workers. My work defined me – especially the last one. It also set me free.

As an operations manager for a wealth management firm, I dealt with process optimization, data management, and such. I was good – really good! But my work felt like a prison, because it was so far from my personality, style and love of creativity.

One part of my job I loved, though, was mentoring college grads to align their talents, abilities and passions with their work. Doing so, I told them, they wouldn’t wake up in 10 years in a job they hated – like I hated mine, I could have added.

Okay, that sounds harsh. There were pros, of course – like heaps of experience and a hefty paycheck. But I worried: What if I got so comfy with cash flow that I never left?

With my 30th birthday nearing and my desire for meaningful work growing, the reality of my situation hit me. We’re talking a whack-your-forehead moment after which nothing will ever be the same. My A-HA? I’d better start practicing what I preach!

Scared shitless, I quit my “real” job, and followed my passion.

Opening the Lady Yum shop was always the plan, I just didn’t know how long it would take or how exactly I would get there. It required meticulous planning, tons of money, education, the perfect space, the perfect product, the perfect people, and the prefect process…and most importantly, I had to acknowledge and deal with my own personal fears and shortcomings. Namely, I had to learn how to ask for help. I had to learn how to let people help me. I had to be ok and comfortable admitting to people that I didn’t know everything. I had to learn to GET OUT OF MY HEAD and take the first step. I had to learn to be vulnerable and put myself out there. Once I started doing that, everything fell into place… and here we are!

This first location is a way to give my friends (whether it’s employees, customers, suppliers, community) an enchanting, memorable experience at a place where they can go to escape, to be whoever they want to be, to sip champagne at noon on a Wednesday, eat fancy cookies, and pretend they are in Paris.

Welcome, my love, to Lady Yum.

Macarons ;) macarons ;)

Y'ALL. Lady Yum. Macarons. Are. Simply. Divine!! Their macarons and not only cute, but appearance aside, they are perfectly sweet without being too overwhelming like how many macarons can be. Shindig and Unicorn are my favorite flavors but sometimes they have cool flavors like oatmeal cookie and honey lavender and they're always fun to try! Macarons aside, this place is the cutest! Their marble tables are the perfect backdrop for that 'gram of your macarons ;)

I lovee this plase;)))

Macarons aside, Lady Yum is an establishment I frequent often because, quite frankly I love it there. Yes, the cookies and champagne are two of my favorite things, but I also love the owner and staff and ambiance they have created in this space. I often bring friends and family to Lady Yum and we are always treated with top notch customer service from knowledgeable and friendly staff. Megan (the owner) goes out of her way to make sure every customer is satisfied with their purchase. She wants you to come back! She also gives back to the community and supports local small business owners, which has a special place in my heart. I wish there were more small business owners like Megan!

I. LOVE. THESE. MACARONS.Thank you Megan!

I. LOVE. THESE. MACARONS. They are simply the best you'll find, period. I'm obsessed with macarons and I've tired countless (hundreds, no kidding!) macarons all across the country/world (even in NY and Paris), and these are hands down the BEST ever. The texture is amazing - the shell is always crisp to perfection and the inside is always soft and gooey. I've tried just about every flavor Lady Yum has to offer, including a lot of the seasonal flavors and there hasn't been a single one that I dislike. The flavors are outta this world - so pure and so intense. The salted caramel is second to none. It's utter perfection! And Megan, the owner is equally amazing! (Not to mention her amazingly beautiful mermaid hair!) She's super hard working and very dedicated to her craft. Even if you didn't know her, you can simply taste the amount of hard work and dedication that goes into every single macaron. Support our local businesses/business owners!

Fantastic!

Delicious macaroons and slightly expensive pricing. There are dozens of flavors to chose from; most are fantastic and all are interesting. The salted caramel and the coconut are my two favorites.

Perfect spot for a coffee date or birthday treat!

Delectable macarons featuring unique, exquisite flavors. Lady Yum makes stunning creations, reasonably priced (macarons cost $2 apiece), including seasonal flavors such as red velvet (tastes just like it!), espresso fudge (prefer classic coffee with ganache instead of fudge), s'mores and oatmeal cookie. Classics include salted caramel, raspberry chardonnay, toasted coconut, lemon, vanilla, pistachio, strawberry. Macarons are made fresh daily and a bit larger / puffier vs. Pierre Herme or Le Panier. The shop itself is incredibly cute - tall-ceilinged and airy with fantastic attention to detail. Love the beautiful wine wall lined with champagne and mini gift shoppe in the front featuring local artists and designers. Perfect spot for a coffee date or birthday treat! Expanding to SeaTac and downtown Seattle in 2017. PS - bottomless prosecco on Tuesdays ;)

I love the gift boxes!

YUM is correct! They macarons are made perfectly with great flavor and a large variety. Very fresh and never stale. The staff is always friendly and helpful. I love the gift boxes they make for any occasions which have been a big hit. I especially like the champs pairing but I must say I'm a sucker for champs. Parking can be a pain, especially if you just want to pick up an order. (There's paid parking across the street) but there is a loading zone.

I love the variety of flavors, the pretty colors, and ...

First of all, it's a macaron and bubbles cafe bar. I mean, I don't think I need to say more beyond this. I've actually been following Megan since she had a kitchen in Kirkland. Even back then, she was very sweet, and her baked goods were delicious. She basically had me at 'lychee macaron'. I was beyond ecstatic to hear she was opening her own shop! She is so talented and creative, and I was excited at the possibility of getting macarons WHENEVER I WANT. Of course the new shop does not disappoint. I love the variety of flavors, the pretty colors, and the consistent no hollow crack-like addiction. Last night, I even made my hubz take me down here just so I could splurge on this months flavors: mango/pineapple and raspberry/lychee. They were literally made for me. I also attended Megan's class at Hot Stove Society on how to make macarons. Well I've not replicated them at home, I hope to soon. The class made them seem less intimidating - even though it might be a different case at home.

It's a good idea on Mother's day))

YAAASSS. Can I say YAAASSS. Sorry. Lady Yum has some HELLA good macarons. Usually other bakeries make their macarons way too sweet, but not Lady Yum. It's perfect. If you're roaming around downtown Kirkland, this is a MUST CHECK OUT in your food destination. It's a cute, small and dainty bakery with colorful macarons for you to choose from. My favorite is the fruity pebbles macarons & the regular vanilla macaron. On mother's day, if you need an idea on what to get your mum, you should totally come to Lady Yum to get her some macarons. They not only have delicious macarons, it comes in a cute box.
