Wow

Wow. Here is a place I can't believe I haven't REVIEWed yet. This is a favorite lunch spot for me and my food allergy husband. While they have a great menu of sandwiches, pizza, and salads, we have the best luck in their market deli case, which changes daily. Our favorites are the pork chop and the half roasted chicken. Juicy, flavorful meats balanced with the right amount of greens: arugula under the pork chop (with a little bit of brown mustard), and I forget what comes with the chicken. The blistered carrots are heaven. I don't know how they get them this, or what the delicious green sauce entails, but my mouth waters at the thought of them. The potatoes are also very tasty and I also recommend the cauliflower (though hubby can't eat it). Plus, whenever we see something in there that intrigues us, the staff is always willing to check the ingredients for us and/or make recommendations to accommodate the allergies. These items are stored cold in the deli case so you can take them to go and re-heat at home, or they'll reheat in their kitchen for you to enjoy in-house.

This place is amazing!!

This place is amazing!! Food is phenomenal and don't get me started on the cake....it's a good thing I don't come here daily because I think I would gain 25 lbs easily. All of the cake flavors are the best cake you have ever tasted. Additionally they have awesome gluten free and vegan options! My only complaint is the space needs to expand because it's so good there sometimes isn't enough room! You must try it if you haven't!!

I went with friends for lunch

I went with friends for lunch. My salad, while very tasty, turned out not to be gluten-free to my dismay. I had even discussed my gluten-free requirement when I ordered and was assured it would be fine. Very crowded at lunch time and I had to park 2-3 blocks away. My friend ordered soup and chicken and we had to ask 3 times to get the chicken part of his meal delivered. It finally came after the rest of us had finished our lunches.

Really yummy.

Ordered my 'small' salad with out cheese, but the chicken breast I think had Parmesan on it. So they could stand to be a little more informative on what their chicken breast contains. But overall very yummy. And the small was huge! I also got the chocolate chip cookie that was gluten and dairy free, that was super delicious as well. I will definitely be back here soon.

Call it a sandwich shop

Tucked in the central East industrial area of Kirkland is a restaurant. Call it a sandwich shop, a cafe, a deli, whatever. Sit out in front (basically in their parking lot) and inhale the paint fumes of the nearby Auto Body shop as you watch the beautiful, skinny Kirkland stay-at-home Mom's pull into the lot in their German luxury car/suv to feed their discerning palates while being secure in the thought they are within almost a stone's throw of their child's grade school. Well, it's not all stay-at-home Mom's but you get the picture.

You want organic, they got it. You want vegetarian, they got it. Gluten Free? Didn't notice but it would fit. Diet soda, fast service or low prices, not here.

I laugh because this is sort of the upscale white collar version of the more blue collar'ish Sarducci Subs on the other side of town. Granted DERU has much much more variety of food so their really uncomparable except for the sandwiches. DERU makes a better turkey sandwich than Sarducci's, but not by much. A typical Sarducci customer would probably feel a bit out of place at DERU. But if you are a sandwich lover, it's worth a try anyway. (There's more than just sandwiches.)

Unlike Sarducci's my Turkey sandwich at DERU was piled sky high with turkey meat although I'm not sure it is any better quality than Sarducci or Subway. It's the thin stuff and they almost put too much on to the point of making eating the sandwich a pretty daunting and messy task. Also unlike Sarducci's they slathered on the mayo which I got all over my face. There was some sort of cheese and then some springs greens type stuff for lettuce (I call them yard weeds.) The sandwich came out hot on focaccia almost too hot to handle. It took a good 15 minutes to get though. I would have much preferred a bit less meat and much more variety on the veggies. What's wrong with a little tomato and onion? Or how about we get REAL crazy and add a couple slices of bacon! No, too much sodium and fat.

The whole sandwich was about as much food as a Sarducci 6" but less overall bread and more meat. Comparing the bread is like comparing apples to oranges. They are both really good. Some say a half is plenty, ya, maybe if you are a petite woman or on a diet. Even so, at $12 for a sandwich and a soda, I probably won't be a regular at this location unless I was wanting to hangout with the Kirkland Sandwich Elite.

One thing I thought was truly ridiculous for this type of establishment is presenting you with a tablet screen when paying that defaults to giving them a whopping tip. This is the first sandwich place I've been to that expects a tip. Is there something a lot more labor intensive here with making sandwiches than other places? Maybe this is where you go when you graduate from making Sandwiches at Subway and Sarducci's? LOL. YES, I DID tip.

It's a nice break from your typical sandwich/sub shop that I'm sure pleases the demographic it's aiming at. (easily 4+ Star for them, a high 3 Star for the rest of us common folk - but just based on one turkey sandwich. I'll update if I go back.)

Updating as promised.

I came here for dinner with my friend, and we ate, sat and chatted here for three hours until closing. That's one of the reasons DERU's great, in that though it can get busy, you never feel like you have to get up and leave right when you're done eating. The place is small, but it's casual (bus your own tables) so you can dine as long as you wish.

As for food, my friend and I inhaled the gluten free, dairy free peanut butter, oat, chocolate chip cookie because it was AMAZING, while we decided what to order for dinner. We opted for a lighter dinner so we shared two sandwiches - the country ham and smoked turkey. It was a good decision because they were huge and definitely filled us up. Both sandwiches were delicious and we would get both again. The focaccia bread was fresh and the sandwiches were stacked high with juicy, sliced meat, cheddar, aioli, and arugula (more detailed descriptions in the photo captions). Great food, reasonable prices.. can't beat it.

I want to keep this place a secret so it stays just as delicious, chill and laid back forever. Five Star.

Great location

Great location off the beaten path along with a clean color palette and open design, makes this place hip and casual. The garden salad is so fresh tasting with sprigs of dill in it. The apple and arugula pizza left a little something to be desired, maybe a little more cheese? But the chocolate peanut butter cake (oh the cake) was amazing and I don't even like cake. Dense and rich. YUM. We also enjoyed the dark chocolate chip cookie, the peanut butter cookie and most importantly, the gluten free oatmeal chocolate chip cookie. This was my favorite, moist and gooey with so much flavor... who knew gluten free could be so darn good.

I can't eat grains

I can't eat grains, so you'd think this place -- with its well-regarded pizzas and sandwiches -- would be a no-go for me. But Deru has wonderful salads and and deli items, as well as gluten-free bakery items (sometimes I cheat with the gluten-free stuff). My only issue with this place is the noise. At lunch time, it's positively cacophonous, what with all the diners and then the music blaring. It makes conversation difficult.

It was love at first sight coming

It was love at first sight coming here- the unexpected neighborhood location, the clean, white, bright, restaurant space, the sunflowers, the mason jars, the chalkboard wall... I loved it all. Also, the staff was very welcoming as I walked in and admired the delicious pastries on display.

The menu changes daily- but they have sweet treats, pizzas (wood fired!), sandwiches and salads.. and for dinner, two entrees. My friend and I decided on the chicken pesto pizza (they make their own pesto!) and one of the entrees featured that night- braised short ribs with fingerling potatoes. The pizza was good- decent sized, thin crispy crust (how I like it), enough chicken, and delicious pesto. The braised pork, however, was just okay. My friend and I were disappointed when it came in a bowl and was more like stew, which we didn't expect. The flavor was alright though, and there was a good amount of meat (w/o bones!) that was hidden in the stew. I think we were just expecting more from the dish since there's only two dinner entrees offered each night. I guess we were wrong. Regardless, we were too full from dinner to try dessert, even though the large slices of cake we saw others eating looked really yummy!

I really wanted to give this place 5 Star because of its close proximity to my home and awesome ambience, but the food didn't COMPLETELY satisfy so I'll have to give it a 4 for now. I'll definitely be back again to try their brunch, pastries, sandwiches, salads, and everything else they have though to see if I can bump up my rating! I have high hopes for this place :)

The food is so incredible

I have avoided writing a REVIEW for selfish reasons. The food is so incredible that I want to keep this place a secret however, it's soooo good that as a food lover I want everyone who knows and appreciates good food to know that it exists. The chefs and owners Jordan and Jamie have a clear passion for food that is evident in each and every dish they create. The menu changes on a daily basis as far as their entree and deli options (however their wood fire pizza is always customizable). Being gluten-free I haven't had the opportunity to try the pizza or the sandwiches however, my fiance eats lunch from there at least three times a week and still can't get enough of it. I have yet to try anything I am not completely blown away by....and I also eat there a lot. I HAVE NOT TRIED FOOD IN ANY RESTAURANT IN SEATTLE OR THE BELLEVUE AREA THAT IS THIS GOOD or that even begins to compete with how good Jordan and Jamie's food is (and I have a culinary degree myself). I haven't even gotten to the coffee......particularly their mocha. They use a hand made chocolate in their mocha's that is to die for! Being particularly picky with how I like my mocha (I used to drive to Bella Epicurean in Seattle for a really good mocha with handmade chocolate) however DERU Market hands down now has the best mocha. Their handmade carmel sauce also is incredible (all of their syrups and sauces are handmade). There is no seating in DERU so all of the food is prepared to go. I personally enjoy going in and ordering my food (they have a different menu printed everyday which is fun to look at - or they also have it posted to their website daily if you prefer having it ready when you arrive), and drink my mocha while I wait for the food to be ready. You won't be disappointed.
